Translated into Spanish. The Word of our God stands forever. 1569 also known as the Bible of the Bear is the first complete translation of the Bible into Spanish published on September 28th 1569. Its translator was Casiodoro de Reina. The Bible of the Bear is commonly referred to as Reina-Valera (RV) because it was revised by Cipriano de Valera in 1602. The Reina-Valera had widespread dissemination during the Protestant Reformation of the 16th century. Nowadays, the Reina-Valera (with various revisions over the years) is one of the most commonly used bibles in Spanish by a large majority of Christian churches derived from the Reformation (including evangelical churches), as well as by other Christian faith groups, such as the Seventh-day Adventist Church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Gideons International, and other non-denominational Christians. Translation by Reina Casiodoro de Reina, a Spanish Hieronymite monk from the Monastery of San Isidoro del Campo, worked for twelve years on the translation of the Bible after leaving into exile to escape the persecutions of the Inquisition. The Bible of the Bear was published in Basel, Switzerland. It is called the Bible of the Bear because of the illustration on its cover of a bear trying to reach a beehive hanging from a tree. This illustration, a logo of Bavarian printer Mattias Apiarius, was placed on the cover to avoid the use of religious icons, as at that time any translation of the Bible into vernacular languages was prohibited. The translation of the Old Testament, as Casiodoro de Reina expressly declares in his "Admonition of the interpreter of the Holy Scriptures to the reader", was based on the Masoretic Hebrew text (Bomberg edition, 1525). As he considered that the Latin Vulgate had already fulfilled its role and contained errors and changes, he preferred to use as a secondary source Sanctes Pagnino's translation into Latin (Veteris et Novi Testamenti nova translatio, 1528), because "by unanimous vote of all Hebrew scholars it is considered the purest that exists so far", correcting the Masoretic version whenever it deviates from Old Testament quotes in the New Testament. He always had at hand for resolving doubts the Ferrara Bible (Abraham Usque and Yom-Tob Athias, 1553), a translation from Hebrew into Judeo-Spanish used by Sephardic Jews, which Reina considered "a work of the highest esteem", " for giving the natural and primary meaning of Hebrew words and the differences of verb tenses ". For the translation of the New Testament, Reina based himself on the Textus Receptus (Erasmus 1516, Stephanus 1550), the Complutensian Polyglot, and the best Greek manuscripts known at that time. Apparently, he had in view the New Testament versions by Juan Pérez de Pineda in 1556, Francisco de Enzinas in 1543, and translations by Juan de Valdés.
